Two Iowa Projects Receive National Recognition

Des Moines and Davenport, Iowa  — Two Ryan Companies US, Inc. projects in Iowa received national recognition by the Design-Build Institute of America/MidAmerica Region (DBIA-MAR) which includes Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. The Ryan teams from the offices of Des Moines and Davenport were honored for their respective work on the DuPont Pioneer Beaver Creek Campus in Johnston and the Union Arcade Apartments in Davenport.

According to the DBIA, its annual awards are intended to recognize the projects and teams that best utilize design-build practices in achieving project goals with emphasis on aesthetics, design quality, functionality, life cycle value, innovation and customer satisfaction. However, there’s more to the event than simply presenting awards.

“Recognition is only part of the reason we have these awards,” shared Oretta Smith, Executive Director of the DBIA-MidAmerica Region. The other is to share best practices and raise the bar for excellence in design-build. Ryan Companies did that on both their corporate design-build work for Dupont Pioneer and the design-build approach used for their residential Union Arcade project. “

The highest honor is Project of the Year, which was awarded to the Des Moines team of Ryan Companies for its Beaver Creek Campus project. “We don’t always give this top award, continued Smith. “It takes an extraordinary project, design-build process and team application to win. I am pleased to share that not only was the Ryan Companies DuPont Pioneer campus project most worthy, it won with a unanimous decision by a very selective panel of judges.”

The Ryan Des Moines team and their Beaver Creek Campus project for DuPont Pioneer won Project of the Year, which is the highest award provided by DBIA-MAR. The Beaver Creek project consisted of two phases totaling nearly 400,000 SF of office and high density laboratory space. Phase 1 was completed in 2011, and Phase 2 was completed in 2014.

The Ryan Quad Cities team and their Union Arcade project received a Merit award for the category of Commercial Multi-Family & Historic Renovation under $25 million. The Union Arcade was a major rehabilitation of a historic building in downtown in Davenport, originally built in 1915 and added on to over the years. The project turned the 78,000 square foot building of office space into 68 units of multi-family market rate rental.
