A thorough wastewater assessment starts with three key questions: 

Question 1: Is your system still adequate for the product mix you’re producing today? 

The products running on your line today may look vastly different than what your wastewater system was originally designed to handle 10 or 20 years ago. Production shifts, such as adding a whey line or pivoting to high-protein yogurt, can change the makeup of your wastewater and place new demands on existing treatment systems. 

One sign that your system is no longer keeping pace is having to limit wastewater discharge to maintain compliance with local regulations. In more serious cases, an inadequate or overtaxed system can result in a notice of violation from your local Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) for non-compliance.

Advances in treatment methods, equipment manufacturing and automation have created new options for removing BOD, COD and TSS more efficiently, often with smaller footprints, less chemical use and lower operating costs. 

Modern systems can also offer greater process control and automation, allowing operators to respond more quickly to changing wastewater conditions while improving safety and reducing manual intervention. Understanding these capabilities is an important first step, but identifying the right solution requires evaluating available options against your facility’s wastewater characteristics, operational needs and long-term goals. 

Question 3: Are you maximizing your opportunities for wastewater reuse and resource recovery? 

Treating wastewater purely as a disposal liability can mean overlooking opportunities to reduce water consumption and operating costs. Given the large volume of wastewater generated by dairy and cheese production, treated wastewater can potentially be reused on site for applications such as equipment and general sanitation or boiler make-up water. 

Treatment processes such as dissolved air flotation (DAF), followed by filtration and pH adjustment, can treat wastewater for certain non-potable uses. Identifying where treated wastewater can be safely reused can help reduce incoming water demand, chemical use and discharge volumes to the local POTW.
